Unhappy reformatted, now what?

I have windows 98 on an "emachine". my goal was to reformat, and not have anything to do with windows. before I reformatted I could run regular dsl (damn small linux) off a cd rom(iso) with no problems. after I reformatted I tried off a cd dsl(iso), dsl-n(bootable), dsl-n(iso), Ubuntu(bootable) and mandrake(bootable). to no prevaile all it comes up with is "invalid system disk
replace the disk, and then press any key"

I have been studying up on linux but havent made much progress, its depressing

please help me

Since you reformatted, why not install Linux on the machine instead of running from a live distro. Let the installation program reformat the drive.

Is the dsl disk the same one you used when you had your windows or did you burn another one. If the disks are not made from image that could be your problem. Another thing is you need to put the cd in and then restart the computer and then the options should come up on screen.

I ran Freesbie from a dual core system that didn't yet have anything installed on its hard disk. I'm thinking if I could do that, then DSL-N can be run in the same manner...a live-cd is a live-cd.

And yeah, I voted (yes).

To use the ISOs all you need to do is uses an option like 'create CD from ISO'. K3B, Nero, etc have similar options. This will make the CD bootable, if that is what you downloaded. A live CD will then boot on a restart, provided that your BIOS is setup to check for a bootable CD.

thanks

hey thanks alot for all of your help so far. I reformatted through fdisk. and I have tried iso dsl and iso dsl-n and some other "bootable" versions of linux....I am fairly new to all this in depth bios etc. if you didnt already guess.
and I use nero, if that helps. I may be blind but I do not see the problem here. maybe burn ANOTHER cd and be real careful about it?
