Unhappy midnight commander

It seems in Damn Small Linux the Midnight Commander doesn't
work like it suppose to work. The build in Editer won't work!
I can't edit a textfile. When I press F4 a strange black window appears.
Please help me.
remove mc to reinstall it fails. What a pitty I want to use DSL for it's
speed and simplicity but without mc I'm finished!

I think this "strange black window" is vim.
If you don't like it, press F9 while in mc, go to Options>Configuration and see if "use internal edit" is checked. If it isn't, you could change your environment variable "EDITOR" to what you want to use.

The use internal editor is marked.
But MC refuses to open it's own editor.
You say change your environment variable "EDITOR"
How can I do that? I'm stucked here.
Thanks for helping me.

If "use internal" is marked and you're not getting anything, then there could be a bug....i haven't seen it yet, though.

Use the command "export EDITOR=new_editor" to set the variable.
You can add this to .bash_profile, .bashrc, or if you just want it applied to mc then add it to the menu item (~/.fluxbox/menu) or just type it in a shell before typing mc. "Use internal" must be unmarked in order for this to work.

I tried what you wrote but it won't help.
Guess it's a bug then.
I reinstalled DSL several times (even on a different computer)
Midnight Commander seems to be a dissapointment.
And I can't remove it to reinstall it.
Damn Small Linux without a working MC is like making love
to a women with a wooden leg.

The only thing I've noticed about mc in DSL that I don't like is the lack of an extensions and user (F2) file...I still can't figure out what would cause the editor to fail.

So I understand that you don't have this problem with mc.
That would be verry weard.
Well maybe you'll figure it out one of these days.
Thanks for your effort. I will stay on the watch for a solution.
And sorry for my crumbly English.
