KNOPPIX can't find filesystem, dropping to limited shell

My desktop (several year old gateway) has no problem booting various live-cd versions of damn small linux, but my year old HP Pavilion can't seem to find the KNOPPIX filesystem (tried using dsl versions 4.4.10 and then 3.4.9).

Searching related threads hasn't been helpful. I'd really appreciate any ideas! THANKS.
