isn't there like a
Code:
update-grub #or grub-update
this usally picks up what it might have missed in an install or forwhatever reason. Ntfs-3g is for mounting NTFS FS in fstab. from what I know of it, at least that is what I used if for.
if you're getting into your Linux , two me, I install grub(2) on MBR.
Code:
install-grub /dev/sda
update-grub
it will not hurt it if your re-install grub where ever you put it the first time. or somewhere else, but if you are going to install it somewhere else, I'd unInstall it where ever it is now first, then install it in the somewhere else place next. this is done without rebooting, or loging out then in again , part one then part two right afterwords.
when I had dual boot, I went with MBR, update-grub searches to see if you have other OS's installed and adds them to the conf boot listing file thingy so you can pick one during boot up. it's either install-grub /dev/sdx or grub-install /dev/sdx x being whatever Partition/hdd you want to put it on.
but you knew that didn't you?
