Try to see if sane recognizes your scanner

$ scanimage -L

If that fails, check that your scanner is plugged into the computer. You also might have to unplug/plug your scanner for /etc/udev/rules.d/sane.rules to recognize your scanner.

Now you can see if it actually works

$ scanimage --format=tiff > test.tiff

Go to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sane for further assistance

also be aware that
Cannon is NOTORIOUS for NOT supporting Linux and Apple
they are very much mostly a Microsoft only shop

check the cannon site
if you are from the USA you might HAVE to use the cannon.eu or uk site and grab the British driver
by law cannon dose NOT have to support non MicroSoft OS's here in the US of A

check is xsane is installed and if the usb scanner is seen
Code:
lsusb
it is listed ? -- should be
