mysql workbench crashes at launch

I followed these instructions to install mysql workbench - https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49730

When I try to open workbench, it crashes, and the automatic bug reporting tool says - mysql-workbench-bin killed by SIGSEGV.

/var/log/messages doesn't throw errors, and journalctl is full of errors that look like this:
mysql-workbench.desktop[13014]: 7f72b9583000-7f72b9584000 r--s 00000000 fd:00 101759273 /var/cache/fontconfig/e61abf8156cc4

the version of mysql installed is -mysql-workbench-community.x86_64 0:6.3.10-1.el7

Could someone suggest how I could troubleshoot this?

Thanks

Just to be clear, I installed the pre-reqs mentioned in the article - proj, tinyxml, libzip.
