Live DVD boots with xforcevesa but installed legacy 5 just blinks the screen multiple times

The live dvd of bodhi 5 legacy worked fine on an old acer aspire 3000 laptop. It's using the vesa video driver. Upon bootup it repeatedly tried to start x but failed blinking back and forth between the black screen with the cursor and a totally black screen you see when graphical X is starting. I placed a customized xorg.conf which says to use vesa in /etc/X11. I uninstalled the framebuffer video server in case it was conflicting. I'm not sure what to do at this point to get X up and running. More than likely you need logs so just let me know which ones you want and I'll get them.
