So, I've gotten me a tablet and installed Bodhi on it. Gorgeous OS, escpecially for a tablet, IMHO. As soon as you turn it on and log in, there's a smooth feel, that fades when the networking gives...
The first minutes, there's networking (wireless) then, after about five minutes, the networking stops. Iftop shows all connections fading, but the App shows 70%-plus connection strength. A ping to the gateway is no longer possible, so it is the NIC on the machine, ot some setting...anyway, it has to be the machine...
I've set it up to have a fixed IP address so I can rule out DHCP failures.
So, main question: what gives?
Does Bodhi (Ubuntu derivative?) have firewall settings I need to tune in?

Try their forum - there has been some issues with (especially) wifi and both wicd and networkmanager. Been a while since I looked at it, but I eventually got it fixed.

What is the hardware you are using that is having the wireless issues?

No sweat...it's not a priority issue...
It's an Archos 9 tablet, I tried several distros, currently F17 is installed, the issue/behaviour is always the same, light traffic (a web page and so on) is okay, as soon as heavier traffic comes through the thing blocks...
I suspect the network card to be broken. What if I install a USB network dongle instead?

Eh, as I said, no biggie, but a tablet could help with some things around here...

Ahh ARM hardware - such a nightmare.

A USB wireless card sounds like it is worth a shot. I'd be willing to be it is just a driver issue with the built in card though.

Iftop shows connections fading? As far as I remember, Iftop doesn't show signal strengths, so you must mean something else. Data rates fading, maybe?

It could be the time to set up an extended ping (to the most local machine that you can ping), and watching the time to respond, and see if that is getting slow, or maybe just failing. If that keeps working, try a similar exercise with a website URL to see if it is DNS or something upstream that is going away (not the likeliest, but worth checking).

Also, if using Network Manager or Wicd, ensure that 'reconnect automatically' is on; I don't why it would be losing connections, but reconnecting automatically could be a workaround, if it does.

(Assuming that's a 'bet'.) Unfortunately, that's probably correct, and you'll have to find out, eg, the chipset and do a search to see if anyone has a fix for it, or other helpful information.

I am curious: how does Bohdi fare, for the touchscreen stuff?
(I suppose that the OS needs something added to the WM or DE, in order to manage the touchscreen stuff? How would it compare, to a fully integrated Android system, for example?)

Well, I tried Bodhi on an Archos (perhaps not the obvious choice) after someone assured touch works...on Ubuntu. Bodhi is Debian based, as is Ubunti, so i figured, why not...
Bodhi is a great light wheight OS...and I loved it at the time, still do by the way...
I have moved on since... and I should have "cleaned up" after myself, sorry to all involved...
Touch is no longer an issue, the tablet has a battery life of...a minute...hehe, no use getting that on the go...so touch was put in the freezer... it was a to install by the way...let alone getting it going...still a wet dream for me
Last I checked, Bodhi was on wersion... 2.4 (?) if I'm not mistaken. On my test boxes, the install was a pain...but then, my boxes are "antiques" hehe

Yes, Bodhi 2.4. I would have also tried antiX on that box, maybe?... but I have no idea if it supports touch. I would also search to see if there is anything in the Puppy family that has been created for tablets - not that I like the appearance of Puppy, but that they have a little community with versions of that for just about everything.

I checked out your link to firefoxos... talk about a bad avatar on that page - it looks like it has burning natural gas spewing from it's butt! Is that only a smartphone add-on app? Or is it a full OS for all kinds of computers as with Linux?

I was thinking if FreeBSD could do the job, it really all comes down on compiling the module in the kernel successfully, the surrounding distro does'nt really matter...
So, of the top o' my head...install Manjaro or Arch (they are the same, Manjaro is less aggressive in the updates/bleeding edge...read "less blood" hehe) and follow the Wiki...
But, Arch requires a little "involvement" from your part, if you can spare a USB stick sufficiently big, maybe the proper spin of Manjaro should be more appropriate...personally, I went with the net edition and did a full build-up from sratch...but, that's just me hehe
