atheros wifi drivers?

i looked in synaptic under a variety of things and also the specific wireless card # and nothing pulls up. i know people have gotten broadcom cards to work - so is it possible? i tried a live version on an old macbook and only wired pulled up and also even when i created a new wireless with security settings and password the save was grayed out - so i figured it did not catch the wifi card so it couldn't create a wireless connection. it was super fast and muchfaster even in live mode vs. installed than debian lxde. maybe the waiter has a clue?
