Sendmail: send-only when local system has no domain name

Posted 10-13-2009 at 01:04 PM by catkin
Updated 10-18-2009 at 12:31 PM by catkin

Hello

EDIT: this works but causes sendmail to pause for ~1 minute when it can't find its own FQDN; this slows boot (if sendmail is started at boot and not backgrounded) and would be un-workable on a busy mail server.

Here's how to configure sendmail to send mails when the computer is configured with a hostname but no domain name. It may be of use, for example, if you want to mail system exception reports and do not want to configure the computer as being part of a...

Slackware: installing from HDD using CD .iso files

Posted 10-06-2009 at 05:26 AM by catkin

Hello

Here's a procedure to install Slackware 13.0 starting with the CD .iso files on a Linux system using GRUB. It is a modified form of the procedure for installing from a DVD .iso file given here.

It was developed and tested on an ubuntu 8.04 system following a pilot Slackware installation in a VirtualBox virtual machine but nothing in the procedure is specific to that environment.

A file system is populated with the files a) required for GRUB...

Xfce: how to set up changing backdrops (wallpapers)

Posted 08-30-2009 at 12:03 PM by catkin

Hello

Coming from Gnome to the lighter weight Xfce I was surprised to discover that no extra packages are required to set up changing backdrops (wallpapers) on Xfce.
