how to get display manager

I have installed arch linux on virtual box and installed gdm

But when I tries to start gdm, the following message happens
(gdm-binary:751) : WARNING ** Couldn't connect to system bus : Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus-socket : No such a file or directory

How to run gdm?

I have also installed xdm but it returns the shell prompt without getting display when I run xdm

It's not a problem with gdm nor xdm. It's a dbus rule problem. I am not familiar with Arch but if you google about dbus in arch it sure will return many solutions. Under ubuntu a short dbus rule will solve the gdm launching trouble. Your problem is not difficult, its a matter of googling for solution.

good luck.

Hello sunils1973,

first check if dbus is running:
Code:
ps -e | grep dbus
if it is running you should change to runlevel 5 with
Code:
telinit 5
But previously make sure to edit your /etc/inittab and uncommend the gdm line:
Code:
x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon

I'll try to phrase the previous a little simpler:

Do you have dbus running? Make sure it's in the DAEMONS=() array in /etc/rc.conf. Here's mine for example:
Code:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus @sensors @network @sshd @crond @alsa @cups @ntpd)
If it wasn't there, add it, and just restart your computer. If it is there, then come back and we'll work from there.

Thank u everybody. There is problem with dbus and as "Meson" suggested, dbus added, make changes in /etc/rc.conf and restarted.

Initially gdm showed some error messages and hanged. Once again restarted but still gdm is not working. NO error messages simply returns the prompt

Well, again the question: is dbus running?
If so, there are two ways you can start gdm, as a daemon or via changing to runlevel 5.
Can you start xdm? or do a startx from the commandline? if not, I'd recommend to check if your xorg-server is properly configured.

Did you install gnome? are any gnome-packages missing?
look at my first post in this thread, you'll have to configure /etc/inittab to start the Windowmanager.
