hostnamectl, localectl, and most other *ctl commands do not work. Systemd is running.

Hi,
Whenever I try most systemd commands, like hostnamectl, they return something like "Failed to issue method call: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." or "Failed to issue method call: Activation of org.freedesktop.hostname1 timed out"

Check the logs:

/var/log/journal

If that doesn't exist, create it for future journaling, but look at /run/system/journal for now.

Maybe you'll find clues there...
