Maybe you have to install Xorg. The package xorg-xinit provides startx. Maybe you've not installed a display manager?

If you are new to Arch it is highly recommended to read the Beginners' Guide, it will explain the installation and give you tips how to install xorg, drivers for your graphics-card (if necessary) and a GUI.

If startx isn't found, it's probably not installed. Have you installed X yet? You might want to look at the Beginner's Guide in section 5 --> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide

Check out this section of the Arch beginners' guide. It will walk you through how to install X windows, your video driver, and how to test X windows. This should get you up and running with the DE/WM of your choice. Good luck.

Please post your thread in only one forum. Posting a single thread in the most relevant forum will make it easier for members to help you and will keep the discussion in one place. Your duplicate threads have been merged for which the sacrificial cost (SCSI chain) is estimated to be one goat.

All the answers here are good. In addition to these, since you are new to Arch, I highly recommend that as you install things, you keep bookmarks or print the instruction pages to pdf files for future reference. I have hundreds of pdf pages with docs that are crucial to my success with Arch. Arch Wiki is your best friend when it comes to installing.

Now, for configuring X, what kind of video card do you have? I have an Nvidia GT 435M, so here are my X configuration methods:

xorg: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Installing
nvidia: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Installing
Dbus (required before you install Gnome) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/D-Bus
Gnome: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME#Installation (when you get to the part where you add to ~/.xinitrc, I didn't use exec ck-launch-session gnome-session - I just used exec gnome-session. Also, I didn't install gdm - I just use startx)

Also, you may learn to LOVE pacman:

pacman -Ss search package name here
pacman -S InstallPackageName
pacman -R RemovePackageName
pacman -Syu <-- synchronizes package databases and updates packages.

Good luck!
