Unhappy Arch64 and nvidia drivers

Hi,

I'm new to arch linux and after some trial and error, I got it installed. I needed to install grub with Gentoo liveCD as it wouldn't work with Arch's cd.

But on to the matter. How can I get nvidia drivers installed? I tried installing with "apt-get install nvidia-glx" but I said it couldn't do it all the way and asked to re-run it. I tried but it gave the same response.

After that I tried downloading the newest drivers from nvidia.com and tried to install those but it stucks when trying to compile the kernel module. I tried with older drivers but I got same thing. "Couldn't build kernel module".

Is there anything else to try?

After installation I updated all packages and then installed xorg and kde.

I've gotten the error saying it needs to reinstall nvidia when I'm running the xserver. If you're using the kde or any other gui it won't install.

I haven't started any xserver myself and I used ctrl-alt-backspace and checked that there's no "activity" in terminal 7. Is there anything else to check is X is running? ps?

I'd imagine that if you haven't started anything or setup up something to start automatically, it's relatively unlikely that it should be running. Wouldn't hurt to check ps -A to make sure something's not there though.

I'm out of ideas, since that was the only thing that gave me problems. I'd still guess that there's something that's conflicting with the drivers that's running, it's just not as obvious. If you post what you get from ps -A myabe someone could recognize a problem.
