Question Turning off notifications

Hi all,
For some reason, I'm now starting to get notifications I don't need and don't want. This is - I don't know the technical term for it - the horizontal strip right at the bottom of the screen. It has a ringing bell symbol on it. It's now informing me of all this celebrity drivel I can't stand to hear about. I've tried all sort of settings to get it to stop, but it keeps on sending me this garbage nevertheless. How do I get rid of it without blocking legitimate alerts like security updates and whatnot?

Many thanks,

CD.

PS: it seems to be something to do with Firefox if that helps at all.

I have not encountered anything of this nature, and Firefox has been my go-to browser for over a decade.

Could you possibly post a screen shot?

What happens when you right-click on the item?

Also, and this a very very long shot in the extremely dark, you might check your add-ons and extensions for something that does news alerts of this type.

Sites ask if you wish to receive notifications.

Just say no.

Click on the FF menu icon (three lines ) and choose Settings. Go to Privacy and Security/Permissions/Notifications. You can turn these on and off on a site-by-site basis.

I spoke too soon. Despite making the recommended changes, I'm still getting them.

Completely Clueless,

I believe that uBlock Origin blocks signup forms and the bell icon in the address bar, but it does not block web push notifications themselves.

To install uBlock Origin (UBO) in Firefox:

Tools > Add-ons & Themes > In the “Find more add-ons” search box, type ublock origin and press Enter.

Follow the onscreen instructions.

Hopefully, that should get rid of the bell icon.

I have UBO on Firefox and there is no bell icon.

In a similar vein, you may wish to install Privacy Badger which is a browser extension that stops advertisers and other third-party trackers from secretly tracking where you go and what pages you look at.

Thanks for that. Getting rid of the bell altogether sounds a bit more serious than I'm prepared to venture at this stage. I'll continue to examine the settings options. Hopefully what I need is lurking in there somewhere...
