Surely apt-get update/apt-get upgrade/apt-get dist-upgrade works, as it's based on Debian(?)

From memory, it has an update app, that shows when new updates are available, so that you can keep your system up to date.

You would normally update/upgrade, change your sources list to the new version, then dist-upgrade, if memory serves me right.

But, I keep a separate /home partition on my Debian based systems, so I just install the new system, keeping my /home intact.

there have been a lot of backend changes to the repos in the last year in an effort to accommodate an upgrade path between stretch and jessie.

So the best I can say here is "we will see".
