HP envy 5020 all-in-one SCANNING

wasn't sure which forum to put this in but i tried to install an HP imaging/printing thing from sourceforge and antix wasn't recognised.

can connect to this printer fine enough to print, although i'm not sure it's meant to be a separate network to the wifi, as it appears.

i tried setting up the printer a few times and all my searches seem to suggest that scanners are the "easy" bit but this one isn't. i had a look in the config files i could find and can't see anything obvious (inc SANE and the HP ones). but also when i set up the printer there's nothing that seems to actually match the model (not my choice, absolutely stupid purchase because the ink won't even be refillable smh). i tried the recommended driver and also one of the "all in one" drivers.

tried plugging in USB, not recognised, could be the wrong lead for all i know but it fit the hole pretty well.

if i found the "actual" lead do you think it would be possible to get this scanning malarkey working?

or any other ideas?

please assume i know literally nothing, thanks. not from a computery background.

I think you just need a newer hplip package than is available in antiX out of the gate. support for that printer was added with 3.17.9.

which set of antiX repos are you using? (stable/stretch, testing/buster, or sid)

I don't normally recommend this, but in this case, it may be easiest to install the hplip from the mx linux test repo (currently 3.17.10).

first add the source to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mxtest.list

Code:
deb http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/ stretch test
then update sources

Code:
apt-get update
and install hplip.

Code:
apt-get install hplip
make sure that nothing is being removed from antiX, so read carefully!

then REMOVE the mxtest.list file

Code:
rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mxtest.list
and update your sources again to put things back to the way they were originally

Code:
apt-get update
after that you should be able to setup your printer in either the hp gui or with

Code:
hp-setup -i
in the terminal. for scanning, you'll probably need to allow installation of a plugin, which the setup routine should find for you. You will see messages that our distro is not supported, just ignore them, at this level is still debian.

hi,
thanks for your instructions.

these are the only files i have in /etc/apt/sources.list.d https://imgur.com/a/Fn5AGYi

should i put it in one of those? or was i meant to make mxtest.list?

thanks

you can put it in any .list file, but I usually keep sources separated into their own files. apt will source any file under /etc/apt/sources.list.d

I forgot about the GPG security keys.

put this text into a file called "stretch.txt"

-----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----
then run

Code:
apt-key add stretch.txt
then update your sources again.

and yes, you can remove the mxtestrepo source from your file and update your sources again to remove it.

thank you.
i managed to complete all your instructions and was struggling to then get the printer still to connect via the hplip. set-up tells me the ports might be blocked by firewall (but i've already allowed mdns/bonjour which is the thing i think it uses)

tried via cups web interface which set up yet another printer, then hp embedded web server with the ip address and and now that's scanning for me... and trying simple scan again, also working now... still not showing up on hp device manager but i can print when i want and scan when i want so that suits me (could it be anything to do with being 32 bit?)

feels like the computering equivalent of flailing around blindly but i pressed the right button somewhere at least

ps enjoying the distro much more than i did ubuntu. glad i went for it this one!
