audio CD playback is constantly buffering/stutters (Mplayer)

Hello
I want to play an audio-CD on a laptop with 4mLinux.

laptop:
1,66Ghz
2GB RAM
4m Linux v4.1.13-smp on i686

Mplayer:
plays plays audio but hangs every few seconds for a second

SMPlayer:
the same, but displays "Pufferung" (buffering) in status when audio hangs

The CDs play fine on other computers and the laptop plays other audio (youtube etc) normal.

Appearently it is something with what libary is used for playback?
I do not want to self-compile. Is there any other solution?

SMPlayer is a GUI for MPlayer. Have you tested with an audio player that's not related to MPlayer, such as QMMP or VLC or Dragon? This would help determine whether the issue is specific to mplayer or more general.

I had wanted to try VLC but it did not start. (will post new thread on that)

Now figured out how to play audio-cd from terminal with vlc:
vlc cdda:///dev/cdrom

That way it seems to play the audio-CD without stuttering.

Hi,

You are running prehistorical 4MLinux version, which is not supported anymore. Just make a fresh install, and keep your system up-to-date by running the "zk update" command at least once per 3 months. Your 4MLinux will be fully operational for years (without the need to reinstall it).

PS.
/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf defines the size of the cache used by MPlayer

.

Hm, now after running the update:
After powering on 4m asks for login in a terminal. I enter: root
Then I type: startx
deskop appears but the touchpad is not reacting to touch or click. The clock and info-things are moving, so system is not frozen. I tried "xinput" in the termial but it said command not found..
At this place I do not currently have mouse. Laptop ist a Terra Mobil 8400

It's a surprise for me that you were able to boot. You were trying to update from the 4MLinux 17 series to the 4MLinux 24 series. Too long gap. You need a fresh install.

After installing new 4M version AlsaPlayer now plays audio-CDs without stuttering.
Mplayer still stutters and sometimes hangs, maybe when changing to next track. (had to "kill" it)

So far, so good. But now connecting to Wlan does not work anymore.
(rfkill list all showed wlan0 as "hardblocked" which I somehow got to go away)
Now "connect" in terminal just says
"udhcpc sending discover
"udhcpc: no lease, failing"

I will eventually make a new thread for that.

Hi,

Perhaps you have VLC and Audacious already installed (*). Go to Menu > Settings > Default Apps and try to setup them as your default players.

(*)
When installing 4MLinux to a hard disk drive, the installation script tries to find additional software (Audacious, Chromium, VLC, GIMP, ...) on the installation media. If the software is found, the script copies it to a hard disk drive.

yes I was going to suggest an actual mp3 player or sound player like Audacious. or increase your buffer or read ahead settings. if their are any.

Well, before I can install other software I will first I have to get internet/wlan functional again. It had stopped working after the update.
I have no preference for any player, AlsaPlayer plays CDs now and that is good enough.

I had tried vlc (on the old 4mLinux install) but it had some problem and did not start. ( https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...or-4175628288/ )

There was some other player but I could not figure out how to open audio-CDs with that one.
