Distribution of the Year

And the best Distro is....

m_yates 11-15-2003 01:37 PM

I know there will be many arguments here, but what about Knoppix? It isn't really a traditional distribution, but I think it has done more for public awareness of Linux, and for increasing the awareness/use of Debian than any of the traditional distributions. It is also current #3 on the distrowatch.com hit rankings.

Skyline 11-15-2003 02:03 PM

Personal favourite is Mandrake 9.1 - a nice middle ground..
SUSE 9 is clearly the most polished - a good example.
Vector 3.2/4 is just plain "fast".
Slack 9.1 with KDE - what a combination....... nice!

Thanks again to all the developers...

CamelofCamelot 11-15-2003 02:41 PM

Slackware! w00t! and root linux is pretty cool.

OmegaBlac 11-15-2003 06:19 PM

Had to vote for Debian. I just installed Fedora so its to early to tell for me if it would have been a contender. I can't even get Arch to install with ethernet support yet so Debian is my pick.

Chu 11-15-2003 07:04 PM

2 things:
1. There's no Gentoo?
2. Slackware is awesome, keep voting for it, everyone ^_^

Sir Gawain 11-15-2003 07:56 PM

Slackware! 9.1 is the best version so far and it keeps getting better.

flyfishin 11-15-2003 08:05 PM

I run Mandrake 9.1 on a custom built box at home and Fedora on my Dell C640. I gave the nod to Fedora because everything worked on the Dell C640 right from the start. Power management works flawlessly, 3D graphics work great, and no garbled screen when the machine is brought out of sleep. Also, yum works great. If yum works on an upgrade from Core 1 to Core 2, as I've read it should, I'll never look at another distro again.

tallship 11-15-2003 08:45 PM

Slackware is in the lead with a 2:1 margin over the second place distro (Mandrake) at this time with 18 votes for slack and 9 for mandrake.

I like Mandrake. I recommend it as a good workstation distro for n00bs at their homes. But alas, I build servers and nowadays have returned to my SLS roots and typically build only Slackware or Open/Free/NetBSD boxes.

hm..... Am I the only person on this planet left that still spells LiGNUx, LiGNUx? ;)

I see Gentoo made it into the polls too, but it's just not quite ready for primetime in the datacenter yet IMNSHO :)

sikosis 11-15-2003 09:21 PM

SuSE 9 is the most polished linux - pity about it's restrictive licensing :(

gboutwel 11-15-2003 10:05 PM

Xandros... Xandros... Xandros....

redbuds 11-15-2003 10:07 PM

Libranet for me. Easy updates, Easy install, I'm just a user couldnt edit a text file without learning how and I havent had to learn.

slinkyredfoot 11-15-2003 10:18 PM

Libranet/Dabian

JDMnet 11-15-2003 11:52 PM

Well; I have used only one Linux distro (well; not counting Knoppix); wich is RedHat Linux v.9.

It is my first Linux to use ever. And I'm very impressed with it.

Anyone have any suggestions on wich other Linux distros I should try? (and they need to be as easy to install as RedHat 9)

shadow.blue 11-16-2003 04:21 AM

Slackware all the way! :)

buttersoft 11-16-2003 04:48 AM

I like Knoppix too. It was responsible for getting me interested in Linux in the first place,

After years of Windows use, I saw somewhere on the Net, that you could buy a CD, not touch your hard-dsik and have Linux up and running from the CD only! I thought coming from Windows WOW! So I tried it. Sure enough 5 minutes after popping CD in, I was checking email and surfing!

That did it for me! Knoppix is responsible for me getting into Linux. Now I love it.

At the moment I am using SuSE 8.2, but if their licensing is going to get more restrictive then I will get the latest Knoppix and use it to install Debian.

I have tried no other distributions, just Knoppix, Debian (a little) and SuSE.

sh0 11-16-2003 04:57 AM

There can be only one - Slackware!

Chu 11-16-2003 05:07 AM

I never knew the Slackware community was so big..

Demonbane 11-16-2003 05:30 AM

go Gentoo..

Misel 11-16-2003 09:09 AM

I just put the link in an IRC channel I regularly visit and there are quite a couple of Debian fans in there. On reply was: Since when did Masochism become a point of view? *fg :D

Thereisnotry 11-16-2003 11:19 AM

I starting my linux campaign with Suse 8.2 and would recommend it to anyone starting out. Installation was a breeze, but after tinkering with it for a few months and getting nowhere with the rpms i choose to go for broke and try something a little more daring.(Debian was its name and apt was its game). Ever since i have found it superb so i voted for it. Mainly because of apt and it's general phillosophy of keeping in with the spirit of Free software. What a radical eh!!!:study:

cyberFISH 11-16-2003 11:42 AM

I started out using redhat just cos I had the cds, BUT switched to gentoo when 1.4 came out and havent looked back.

ITS SOOOO FAST, but took 4 days to set up!

R@LF 11-16-2003 11:43 AM

I voted RH, but now I swithed to Fedora .... I don't know yet.

I thought Knoppix was the most inovative distro !

Rolf

novices2k 11-16-2003 12:04 PM

I prefered SUSE :)

frieza 11-16-2003 12:25 PM

no mention of ppc linux distros like yellowdog... oh well, it's redhat based

lepton 11-16-2003 12:58 PM

Since I've installed Suse 9.0 in my system Microsoft became a fadding memory...! ;)

Try Xandros, especially their new v2.0 Desktop. If you like RedHat 9, you'll LOVE Xandros. Easiest Distro I have every had to setup and installl bar NONE.

The new v2.0 will have a d/lable trial edition, so you can litterally try it before you buy it.

randomblast 11-16-2003 02:40 PM

redhat for me, although i may try gentoo if i get a new hdd and do a fresh install

synaptical 11-16-2003 02:49 PM

libranet for ease of installation. slackware for everything else. :D

joseph 11-16-2003 07:13 PM

Redhat is what i use till today

leonscape 11-16-2003 07:35 PM

I've tried quite a few but Debian has been the only one I've been happy to stay with. Started on Redhat, went too Suse but had problems with it ( probably my fault though ), and had Gentoo for a while. Redhat lasted the longest of the others, but once you've had apt from a distro that was designed for it theirs really no going back.

Inexactitude 11-16-2003 08:06 PM

I think that Mandrake is great as a home desktop distro. It's easy, relatively powerful and has all the bells and whistles customary to home desktop operation systems.

Brane Ded 11-16-2003 08:31 PM

Yay for Slackware!

a slacker 11-16-2003 09:45 PM

Slack all the way :)

BittaBrotha 11-17-2003 02:20 AM

I would have to say Debian Sid, because it is setup just the way i want from a distro. Slackware 9.x is a big second.

aizkorri 11-17-2003 02:22 AM

I'm for Mandrake, but I didn't know there were so many slackers around here.

ozdream 11-17-2003 04:22 AM

SuSE 9.0

SusE 9.0 all the way! Slackware is for slackers ;)

Tap-Out 11-17-2003 06:03 AM

I've tried Slackware (not sure which version), Knoppix 3.2, Redhat 9, and Mandrake 9.1, and my vote goes to Mandrake no questions, just due to it picking up virtually everything hardware wise, and having a lot of the programs I coulden't get to run on RH installed right away. A very nice and easy to work with distro. My vote goes to Mandrake.

repe 11-17-2003 06:38 AM

Slackware! ;)

georwell 11-17-2003 07:24 AM

The BEST!

GENTOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mrpdaemon 11-17-2003 07:52 AM

Slackware all the way...

neenee 11-17-2003 07:58 AM

gentoo *ra ra ra*

Andronik 11-17-2003 08:55 AM

have tried dead-rat linux from 6-9.0-from fedora i am off it.
proben mandrake and suse ,turbolinux and -at last -when know things better moved to>Slackware
and must say :"slack owns ,it gives me exactly what i want, in way i want and when i want".
if other distros makers will make all explanations as clear and short as they are in slack ,m$windooz is gone.
So i just go slacking.Clear things are good ones.

Meatwad 11-17-2003 10:02 AM

Although I would normally say Debian, I have to acknowledge the tremendous work the Libranet team has done and it shows in their distro.

Power User 11-17-2003 12:17 PM

Wow, there is ONE vote for Vector!

I like Slackware, everything works because there is nothing to mess up!

Skyline 11-17-2003 12:58 PM

Few distros can make windows under KDE open before you've clicked the mouse - Vector can - its a fast Slackware based distro....... a nice addition...
