I can't decide which Freebsd release to install


I been wanting to install Fsd 6.2 for some time now, I'm currently enjoying an easy Slackware 12.0. I may as well be a noob because i haven't been in the Linux Unix seen since 2004. at that time i used Freebsd 4.8 then got into 5.1 and with the handbook at hand was able to recompile my kernel (whoopy, im sure that doesn't mean jack to any of you hackers). anyway I'm that kind of moron that wants the latest and greatest however I know that with the little chubby red demon; the latest doesn't always mean the greatest. I know that the 6x is supposed to be the stable release but i haven't been involved since 5.1 and cant possibly know if there was a favorite in between. I have read the newbie section titled: "Choosing the FreeBSD Version That Is Right For you" but im alittle embaressed to say that i'm more of a desktop user that is curious about the deeper end of things. heres my dmesg: if it helps, I know i have to skim my kernel it's huge.

I think 6.2 would work fine on your machine.I liked 5.3 as well as it seemed very solid.

I'd say, go to 6.2, because it's probably not going to be too long until 6.3, then after that 7.0 will be looming on the horizon... Besides, version 6.x is quite stable, as it was intended to be a stability major release.

I'm thinking PC-BSD looks very interesting.I think I may try it myself.

I went with 6.2. too early to give any feedback. so far my logitech trackball(usb)mouse isnt working but good thing is that the boot process and dmesg shows every device acurately, even my microsoft web camera, the dmesg on this thead is from slackware, no signs of any microsoft web cam even though its plugged in. I guess a kernel compile is in order. Suks to be a noob.

Huh?

Why do you think FreeBSD has dependency issues? I've been using FreeBSD since 2002 and what I thought were dependency issues with FBSD was actually user-error issues that I can now fix easily.

I think you need to study the portupgrade manpages.
