Have to apply patches in order?

Is it true that you have to apply patches in the order they come out since they're basically diffs? If so what do you do when you don't want to apply one patch that causes problems, but want to apply the rest of the patches?

Yes, you apply patches in order. You don't apply patches to software that's not installed. You could probably get away with not installing patches for apps/tools/commands that you don't use that are included in the base install, but if something breaks, it's your own fault.

If you have a problem with system instability due to a patch, inform the developers/maintainers as you might either have a unique situation or the patch created an unforeseen problem. The devs might be able to quickly produce a "fix" patch.

I'm using FreeBSD 7.0 for educational purposes now. Thanks for the replies so far.
