There is a FOSS RPG game-making project called "OHRRPGCE" that I like to play around with sometimes. It is cross-platform and they even have a DOS version, which is why I made this list that may or may not be help for to someone out there.
Grab the hasta-la-qb+ version if making for DOS (works in DOSBox) and then use hspeak.exe from tirgoviste because otherwise it will require Windows. PsychOS 3.4.6 already includes this with the fix and has the GNU/Linux version too. Just make sure to build with the DOS version BEFORE the GNU/Linux version since the DOS version is much older.
What you can do is create music for the game using something like MuseScore and then export the MIDI to then use the DOS version of OHRRPGCE to convert to BAM (Bob's Adlib Music), which is a smaller file size format. The cool thing about BAM, even that is an ancient audio format, is the the modern stable version of OHRRPGCE for GNU/Linux still supports it. You can also play it with DeaDBeeF.
The following is a list that should help you figure out which instruments to use in MuseScore (and probably other programs) for when translating to BAM.

The following list was created by TheOuterLinux for use with the DOS
version of OHRRPGCE (https://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/About);
however, please use this version: https://theouterlinux.gitlab.io/Downloads/OHRRPGCE.zip
as it uses the version of HSPEAK.EXE that doesn't require Windows. And
as long as you develop using the DOS version of OHRRPGCE, it will play
just fine with newer ones for Windows/Mac/Linux.
This list is what happens when MuseScore2 .mid files are translated with
MIDI2BAM.EXE that is included with the DOS version of OHRRPGCE. You can
play back converted BAM files using either the PLAYBAM.EXE that comes
with OHRRPGCE or use DeaDBeeF (http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/).
