Good Lord, Linux is going to lose all it's old-time users this way. You've introduced far too many unnecessary changes too quickly. Worse, the changes are unwarranted.
It's understandable to feel frustrated with changes in technology, but blaming Linux for a simple mistake is unfair. It's important to take responsibility for our own mistakes and not attribute them to external factors. Linux is an evolving system, and while some changes may be challenging, they are often necessary for progress. Additionally, it's essential to have an open mind and adapt to new technology, rather than clinging to the past.g

The maintainer has given 20 years of his life to keeping one step ahead of youtube's software guys. How much has he made from it? Have you ever donated? I'd be fed up too.

youtube-dl on Linux

youtube-dl is a project that has been discontinued for quite some time. It worked for a long time, but if you used it via the command line with a link after the command, the download was usually extremely slow, always below 100 kbps.

What has happened is that the maintainers of most Linux distros have left youtube-dl stuck in the repos, and so most Linux users still don't realize that youtube-dl is a dead project and continue to use it at that extremely low download speed.

The FreeBSD maintainers have solved this problem a bit more thoughtfully by creating a link from youtube-dl to yt-dlp. So all those years of Linux users doing youtube-dl and getting extremely slow downloads, FreeBSD users have been seeing the following happen to this command (for years):

I regard youtube-dlo as dead Why don't you head over to the github site and check for recent commits? Maybe then you'll believe folks.

There is one script that works. It's called yt-dlp. You can install it with pip3.

Forks are great when they improve on the original. Libreoffice is superior to openoffice, whose development is stalled. When youtube-dl was taken down over some specious "Copyright infringement," there were half a dozen replicas up within a week. yt-dlp emerged as superior. After 36 posts, give over, convert to yt-dlp and get over it. "The king is dead, long live the (new) king" sort of thing.

If youtube-dl was working today I wouldn't use it because it obeys youtube's download throttling, whereas yt-dlp bypasses it.
