How to get "directories" instead of "places" view of Dolphin file manager when used by other programs?

I use dolphin as file manager, also in other programs like e.g. firefox when clicking on "Open File". But it consistently opens in the "places" (Orte in German) view with no tab to change to "directories" view. Anybody here who knows how to change this?

Hi again JZL240I-U

When you open Dolphin, do you have a toolbar at the top?
One that shows:
File, Edit, View, Go, Tools, Settings, Help

IF you do, what happens if you press Ctrl+M at the same time?

What should happen, is that the above listed "toolbar" is hidden, and the button I mentioned earlier
(if you remember the screenshot) will show right of the Search icon.

But this is not a complete sollution for you, just a bit on the way...

Using your browser, when you click on something you'd like to download.
In that window, what happens if you press F9 ?
(The filemanager window)

Yep, I get the "hamburger menu" where I can toggle directories, places and other things.

Nothing happens . But the FN-key of this logitech ERGO K860 might be a little finicky, e.g. F2 in dolphin (to rename files) doesn't work either...

I'm not sure, but I think your firefox is opening the wrong filemanager.

I made a new profile for FF, and (I think) I am getting the same "problem" as you (it is def not opening the correct filemanager, that's for sure)

Anyway, I did this:

open FF, in address field type:
about:config
Confirm that you "accept the risk and continue"

In the search field "Search preference name", copy/paste the following two lines (one at the time)
Code:
widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.file-picker
The default value on that is 2, click on the pen (edit) and change it to 1
Click on save

Next to change/edit
Code:
widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.mime-handler
The same thing here, default value is 2
Edit (click on the pen) and change to 1
Save

Close FF, and re-open it again. It should now work as supposed to (using Dolphin as default filemanager in FF)

Yeah, now this is improving. The menu shows the directories in the right panel. On the left (main) side it is still places, though. Can one change that too?

Whatever, many thanks for your help so far .

That should be possible, yes.

Once you download something, the filemanager you'll see can be configured to hide/show the "Places".

Just press F9 (if you are able to use the F-keys now).

As far as I can tell, this is the only option available in this view.

F9 actually closes and opens the places panel on my system. So, there is no way to get the directories? Well, it is at least a lot better than before. Thanks again .

It seems like FF/Filemanager is opening the folder where you downloaded something to (I'd guess this is default setting, somewhere in FF config).

But now when you're able to use F9-key and can see "Places", click on Home as an example, you should see all folders/directories in your home dir

This is the closest I can get to a directory view when you want to download something
