Best Free Network/Asset Monitoring Software

Hello,

I was hoping to get some feedback regarding best tools out there for monitoring network assets. The assets I would like monitored are primarily RedHat and Debian based systems.

I have some experience as I played with Nagios many years ago. Instinctively, I would consider this tool, however my feeling is it might not be a good tool for a professional work environment (not hardened enough and not modern enough). I have been seeing a lot of good reviews on Zabbix but I know very little about it. Maybe someone wiser in this area can provide some good insight, advice, or comments?

Thanks again,

Joe

I have used both in a rather large network environment. I prefer Nagios, but that may just be personal fit. I know of no clear and objective reason to select one over the other. If your case is nontrivial, I would pick one and stick with it. Migrating form one to the other can be a real pain.
