How to install Adobe Flash Player for Red Hat Linux

Posted 11-02-2011 at 07:31 PM by skinutter

Being a Linux newbym, seems to take me 3 times as long to install stuff on Linux than it did on Windows --arghhh.
I needed to install a new version of Flash Player today as one of my work applications needed version flash-plugin-11.0.1.152-release.x86_64.rpm or higher.
I went to the Adobe site and downloaded the package, but could not find instructions how to do that.
Using my limited knowledge and some info from forums, I downloaded it in the Flash Player folder and tryed installing it using rpm -ivh flash-plugin-11.0.1.152-release.x86_64.rpm

That failed saying the installed version was newer that the version I was trying to install, that was not true. Eventually found another forum which advised that the old Flash Player needed to be removed before installing the new one. I wish Adobe would provide some instructions that say that!

Here are the steps for anyone interested:

1. Download the right Flash Player for you version of Linux into the Flash Player home folder,
usually /home/your_userid/.adobe/Flash Player for RH Linux.

2. Remove the old Flash Player. Make sure to shut down your browser first.

Removing the old Flash Player steps.

a. Open a Terminal
b. Become the root user by typing "su" in the Terminal window and pressing "Enter".
c. Authenticate yourself by typing the root password when prompted and pressing "Enter".
d. Uninstall the flash player by typing "rpm -e flash-plugin" in the Terminal window and pressing "Enter". Press "y" and "Enter" if prompted.

3. Install the new Flash Player

a. cd to /home/your_userid/.adobe/Flash Player
b rpm -ivh flash-plugin-11.0.1.152-release.x86_64.rpm

That should do it
