Using Chrome OS as a safer way to use the WWW.

Posted 11-21-2009 at 11:36 AM by rich_c

With Google releasing Chrome OS in source code form this week, something occured to me...

It could be a way for security conscious Windows users (OK, I know. The thought of that gives me a headache too!) to perform online transactions like internet banking with a higher degree of safety from malware than they've had previously. Here's how I reckon it'd work:

1. Download Chrome OS from here. You've a better idea where it's coming from that way rather than the BitTorrent...

How to allow users to execute admin applications.

Posted 11-16-2009 at 11:44 AM by rich_c

On a few forum posts now, I've stated that there must be a way of working around the need to provide the root password for certain administrative tasks. This is generally in response to threads started by people who find typing in a password when they want to install programs (For example.) to be extremely irritating.

I was convinced that there's a way of achieving this using sudo while maintaining some semblance of control of the system in question. I think I found it! I've implemented...

I almost feel sorry for them...

Bad news week for Microsoft then.

1. They got caught potentially violatinig the GPL here.

2. Everyone's lauging at them for trying to patent sudo.

3. Somehow it's a good idea to sue people who point out exploits that could be costing them dear.

Oh well, at least the Windows 7 honeymoon period isn't over yet. I'm guessing it'll only be a matter of time before people realise even with that, it's SSDD.

Well, ever since I first heard of Hannah Montana Linux, I wondered if there was any mileage in themed remasters.

In order to get some idea myself, I remastered PCLinuxOS Zen Mini with some cosmetic changes for a dog owner forum. Generally not very tech oriented people at all...

I tried to provide as much easily accessible information as I could, including info for using Live CDs etc. but the underwhelming response I got was it was still all too much for them to understand......

My thanks to Silverbear on the MepisLovers forum for bringing to my attention a genius analogy! It concerns using the CLI.

Suggestion: forget the old farts who are afraid to type. Tell a young person that using the command line is faster, because it's directly text-messaging the operating system.
I'll certainly use that one!
