SYLPHEED - uses wrong program to open PDF files

Posted 01-30-2023 at 11:15 AM by error_401

Lately in Debian 11 with the stable version I encountered an issue with Sylpheed using the wrong software to open PDF files.

After reading through the manual here:

https://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/doc/manua...lpheed-14.html

I solved the problem at user level by making an entry at the top of the mailcap file.

The files location is: /etc/mailcap

It can only be edited by root. Sylpheed Manual 14.2 explains how the mailcap is used. As it browses through the file from top to bottom to associate .pdf with a program it found several entries before hitting "OKULAR" or your favorite PDF-program. By adding the following entry to the top of the list below the comments I solved the problem. Sylpheed needs a restart to use the new version of the mailcap.

Add something like the following or search and copy/paste the entry of your favorite program to the top as I did.

Code:
# USER ADDED - BEGIN
application/pdf; okular %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
# USER ADDED - END / Following are system generate
Problem solved, Sylpheed now uses okular to open.
