ATI, X11 and kernel screw up

Posted 02-11-2006 at 09:48 PM by carboncopy

Had my linux machine X11 server screwed up.

What when wrong was, I had compiled a new kernel 2.6.15.1 but never "install" it. /usr/src/linux was pointing to 2.6.15.1 while I was booting 2.6.15.

Those were ok until X11 was upgraded to version 6.9.0 (Slackware-current), which normally requires a reinstallation of ati drivers. After downloading the latest ati driver and install it, X11 still works but only for about half a day and it will crash the computer.

Then, I downgraded the X11 back to 6.8.2 and reinstall ati drivers, that makes things worst. I couldn't get a working X11 but I could ssh in to machine to reboot.

After digging around, I realised the kernel version problem. Now, I have upgraded it to 2.6.15.4. Installed back the X11 version 6.9.0 and latest ati driver 8.22. Everything works fine again.

I was considering buying a Radeon X1900XT today, they look so good and pretty reasonably priced but was talked out of it in favour of waiting for the Geforce 7900 series to appear mid-March. I bet they cost a whole lot more than the ATI card and after researching the specs (nothing solid on the Geforce though, Nvidia are good at secrets) I'm not even sure it'll be a better card than the ATI...
