For the benefit of anybody who is having problems installing Linux on the Acer E11 netbook:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/install...er-aspire-e11/

Changing Acer F12 Boot Menu option to Enable:

You should be able to use the UEFI boot (instead of using Legacy) with your USB HDD, without disabling Secure Boot.

If you prefer to disable SB and use Legacy then:

Changing BIOS mode from UEFI to Legacy:

Disable Secure Boot:

Then select Notebooks and follow the instructions for completely shutting down.

In the words of Acer:

Quote:
We suggest removing the supervisor password immediately after enabling Secure Boot. If you choose not to remove your supervisor password, make sure you write it down for future use.
Although the author of the ZDNet article used Ubuntu, Fedora and openSuSE, I would recommend the lighter weight distro, MX-16 for the E11 netbook.

MX-16 has the added advantage that it will automatically recognise the notoriously problematical Broadcom wifi card.
