Compile Linux Fedora Core 4

Please note that i am new for linux. I want to implement time based access-lists using iptables. This requires installing patch-o-matic in the kernel then complining the kernel. I installed the patch-o-matic, but the problem when i compiled the kernel i got many errors. Can you provide A-Z steps on how to compile the kernel without getting errors.
