well.. I entered "linux solitaire" in google, and found these 2 interesting links: www.solitairecentral.com/sol_linux.html and http://www.oberhumer.com/opensource/pysol/

btw, the KDE has a nice solitaire game too. I even like this one more then the Windows version, because you can customize the entire look of the application.

I hope you can convince your father that "different is cool", and not a bad thing. If he wants 100% copies, he should use Windows anyway. For example, Mozilla or Konqueror are different, but I like them more then the Windows (Internet) Explorer.

...just don't bother him with difficult things. If he knows how to start solitaire, you should be happy I've given my little sister an user account at my system, told her she can't distroy anything of the system (expect her own account, which I can restore), and I notice she likes some KDE programs a lot more... She doesn't want to know much, but asks about something when she needs it. (and I see her discovering some things herself too, which is cool)

Just don't say Linux is the best, because people get disappointed by it. I'd like to say that it's different, but I like the difference too much, even though it isn't perfect either.

I agree PySol is great and it has a LOT of good solitaire games. But Hearts is missing and I have a feeling if you got Wine to work you still wouldn't be able to us MS hearts. If you have a compiler there's a version of hearts for KDE, but I could never get it to make without errors. PySol has so many solitaire games, though, you'll probably never miss hearts.

Dear Yapp

My father is 100% against open source he thinks that good software is made by M$ only. The thing is, Hearts and Solitaire is the only reason he even turns on the computer. So its damn annoying for me to constantly change between OSs and he keeps on complaining. But I am not going to switch back to windows just because of hearts and sol!

Try to be more patient with your father.

hehe.. this is quite unfortunate.. but what is his motivation for this? I'm really curious. I'd like to listen to his story.....

Yeah... but I don't think he dislikes Microsoft software, because he obviously never had problems with it... because you won't if you play solitaire a few times!

Maybe Linux is too confusing/different. (for example, the K-menu is too bloated for him, compared to Windows) stuff like the philosophy (open source) can't really bother him either off course

But is this your computer btw? And because you use the computer for different things, you have different demands... and Microsoft doesn't fulfill these. It's expensive, has viruses, all sorts of problems you don't want to handle with, and you might need to reinstall the system every half year.. (enough bashing ) But he isn't aware of these problems, because he doesn't use computers for anything else if I'm not mistaken?

I hope these things are some arguments for a good conversation... hope this helps.

Have you considered using VMWare for this?

Yes it is my computer! He does have a PC in his office but all he does is like type some stuff on word and go to Yahoo chat (for business). But as far as I know his computer is like the most messed up one in his office. He saves documents on the desktop!

Another story about my father and computers, around 5 years ago when I was too stupid to use a computer my father created our first mail account (from our ISP) and the same time he subscribed to every mailing list that he saw. Now this mail account is blogged with spam. 15 mails a day on average.

We are not really rich, but in Russia you can get WIndows XP for like $3, if we had to pay like $200 for XP then my father might have agreed with me. But he says "If you can get stuff from M$ for free then whats the point in using this Linux"
