What kinda of support are there for slackware? such as updates?

I have been a RH user for quite awhile and was thinking that it's time to try something new. I was wondering is there any kinda of update script such as up2date for RH and yum for fedora, but for slackware? Or is this something that need to be done manually?

updates are done semi manually in Slack. There are several tools out there that help with the process, my preference is for slackpkg which is included with the distro (in the extras section) However you should not use this tool cart blanche, instead you will want to subscribe to the mailing list and keep and eye on the change log. There are a bunch of threads about this in this forum... search around some.

//edit
There are not all that many updates to handle unless you track current, so stick with the stable 10.2 until you get more comfortable being in the drivers seat.

I prefer the keep the system at the latest stable version, unless I see there is something worthy in those current directories. I do any update manually, it is not that hard to type
Code:

upgradepkg --install-new <package_to_upgrade>.tgz
is it?

And it's fairly trivial to set up an rsync with one of the Slack mirrors, so you automatically get the Stable updates.

Cheers,

Swaret - automated tool in the Slackware extras directory that connects to official Slackware mirrors, compares changelogs, downloads updated packages, backs up old packages and install thems for you. Also works with "unofficial" packages from places like LinuxPackages.net if you edit the config.

That what you're after?
