using linux-wlan-ng
 

Hi!

I used the linux zydas driver 0.3 for linux 2.4 kernels and it compiled fine and is detecting my network! But, It can't connect because of the WEP keys. I was wondering first of all: how to use wep encryption and second: how do i set the keys?

I am a little confused. The linux-wlan-ng package is for prism 2.0, 2.5. 3.0 based wireless cards. That driver supports usb, pcmcia, pci devices. If you are using that package (in /extra on the install disks) the configuration is done in /etc/wlan. Google for linux-wlan-ng and you will see links for the the documentation.

I do not know about the Zydas software (are they using linux-wlan-ng drivers?)

Prism based pci, pcmcia wireless cards are usually detected as orrinco based drivers which mostly work on prism 2 cards. Since the driver is in the kernel source no additional drivers need to be installed for pci/pcmcia prism cards.

Edit: The configuration for those cards us wireless tools which is in /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf

For prism 2.5 based usb cards the linux-wlan-ng drivers are the only way to go.

It would be helpful if you post the type of wireless device you are using to get more focused advice.

the zydas 0.3 driver is built off of the linux-wlan-ng driver. Any way, I got it to use WEP now it isn't connecting!!! I think the problem is that the ESSID and my SSID are the same. I will have to fix it.

It might be better to use the linux-wlan-ng drivers that Pat provided in the extra section or compile your own. The latest version of the linux-wlan-ng drivers will only work with the 2.6 kernel and Pat has stayed with version linux-wlan-ng-0.2.1pre25. In think the drivers are kernel specific also as he made 2 separate versions for the stock 2.4 kernel and for the 2.6 kernel. Alternatively you can compile your own. I am not sure how the Zydas driver was installed. Was it from source vs a binary and if it is a binary what kernel it was compiled against. If you install from source or use The slackware binary you will find the documentation you need to configure essid and wep keys in the /etc/wlan. Do a less on the wlancfg-DEFAULT. It is heavily commented. You set which wlancfg-*** you use in wlan.conf.
