TV Output
 

Ok guys, long time no post, I have a RADEON 32MB SDRAM video card. It has a TV output, when I am in console it wokrs great, but when I try "startx" I get and "Out of Sync" error message on my monitor and have to reboot to get my screen back. The TV goes out too. FYI, the OoS message came from the monitor not Linux, and I am using XFree86 4.2.0. Any ideas on how to fix this? I use Gnome if it makes any sifference, and Slackware 8.1

Well since no other posts I will make a guess but perhaps you will need to confirm something as well. Can you disconnect the TV Output and power on and run X with just your monitor and all is well? Or you can't run X at all?

If the first then, then I suspect the video card is restricted in the vertical/horizontal sync range for the resolution setting. This restriction would have to do with the NTSC or PAL conversion of the VGA signals. Probably the vertical sync at 60 Hz for US NTSC, or 50 Hz for Euro PAL. You might try to force X to a single vertical resolution in the XF86Config file.

If the later, then X is probably not setup correctly. Attempt to config X without the TV Output connected. I have seen some issues where X is setup for monitors and runs great, but would not load using an LCD panel. It would complain about no usable setting available or some such nonsense. I haven't had a chance to try and figure it out yet though.

Thanks a lot man, your post made me realize, in windows everytime I activate the TV output it forces down to 800x600!, Maybe if I lower linux it'll work! Thx man......btw my X is great

Have you tried raising the limitations of the Refresh Cycles (Hz)for the monitor in the xf86config file? If its a NEWER Monitor it should have good margins..IF its OLD It might be a fixed Hz and you would need to determine what that setting should be? Usually you will just get a distorted picture if the settings are messed up, but sometimes no picture at all? Sorry that Im Little OR NO HELP whatsoever
