!Sometimes! boot freezes at hotplug!

I compiled my kernel then installed all drivers (ati,ipw2200... ) two days ago
from the day from yesterday i opened my computer 3 or 4 time there was noting wrong
but today it freezed at activating hotplug then i rebooted my machine and this time it opened
what do you think abaout my problem
(I dont login as root from the first day i did not change anything abaut the system!!)

You are not alone, hotplug completely locks my laptop at boot. I even passed "nohotplugd" to the kernel, but ended with a lock up too. I am back to reinstalling Slackware with 2.4 kernel and no hotplug till I have solved the problem.

Finally, I'm not the only one who thinks hotplug is a problem. As far as I'm concerned, hotplug should be due for a major revamp, or I guess someone has to find a better way of implementing hardware detection under linux, but I suppose until that time, hotplug can always be disabled, as an alternative. In my case, I run a desktop, so I never had hotplug freeze on me, however it takes almost a minute or so just for it to finish, and thats why I decided to just turn it off. Sure, after doing that, much of my devices did not work, but that was easily remedied in uncommenting a few things in rc.modules, and re-running alsaconf. Sure, if you want to add a new piece of hardware, this also might be a setback, but compared to 1+ minutes of boot time, and possible crashes with hotplug, its a small price to pay.... and thats my :twocents:

did you tried to make the hotplog script non-executable
in root

Code:

chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug
