##slackware channel on Freenode

I just tried to jump on the ##slackware channel on Freenode and it says I'm banned (nick = uslacker). Anyone on this forum frequent the channnel? Any idea what's going on? (I haven't been there in months and have never said more than 10 words. I can't imagine why I'd be I'm intentionally banned).

Thanks

were you registered on Freenode. If not, it's very possible that someone was using that nick and acting foolish on the channel. write to the ##slackware mods to see if you can get anything done about it.

the bot also autobans if you try to join the channel using the root account on your box.

a quick look in the logfiles:

Quote:

[27-09-2006][01:41] >> uslacker (n=root@pool-70-110-212-10.phil.east.verizon.net) has joined ##slackware

[27-09-2006][01:41] << Kick for uslacker by slackboy from ##slackware [banned:It is very dangerous to IRC as root. Please return under a user account. You can create a user account with the adduser command. Once created, logout of root, login to your user account and return to the channel if you wish.]

1) so follow the instructions ..
2) register your nickname as outlined (see freenode website)

and you shouldn't have any problems joining ##slackware

Hmmmm..... Doesn't kick me when I'm root... :jawa:

Michielvw 09-27-2006 09:36 AM

it would depend on how your irc client is configured. As far as I am aware the bot is programmed to kick when the username (n=root) is root or the UID of root (n=0)

which is also what the kick/ban message sais ;)

Ahhhh...... Gotcha'. It is pretty silly to get on IRC as root. There is a high probability of some devious types hanging about...

Interesting that using x-chat that was never an issue. I tried using Konversation...

##slackware is apparently not run by libertarians.
