screen size problem

I have just finished using WinXP since my project is over and it's been so long since I used Linux I decided to go a bit nuts... well, not that nuts really. Anyway I installed Slack8 with nothing really, no GNOME, no KDE, no excessive shells or libraries etc, and decided it'd be nice to get it all on there myself.

So after 3hrs or so I'm running enlightenment but the problem is whenever I set XF86Config to start up in 1280x1024 (my preferred screensize) instead of the nice NVIDIA logo, I get three identical NVIDIA logos a third of their normal width and everything on the desktop is being drawn three times. This happened a little a couple years ago and I couldn't figure it out then, but it went away if I restarted XFree86...! This time I'm stuck in 1152x864 and my eyesight is begging for more.

Anyone know about this?!!

Cheers
Alim

There is an app called xvidtune (type it in the xterm) that can fix this sometimes

You need to put the correct specifications for the monitor in the XF86Config file (i.e hysnc vrefresh dotclock etc) (mine is in /etc). There is a modeline calculator here http://www.dkfz-heidelberg.de/spec/linux/modeline/
though i do not know how good it is. There are also programs you can download to tell you the modelines. I'm sure someone else who knows what all this stuff means can explain it better

there is also a helpfile distributed with X about this though it is pretty technical, i was able to get mine working with *a lot* of trial and error
