New Anniversary Tradition

This month is the 22nd anniversary of the first Slackware release (July 16, 1993).

I would like to start a new tradition, an annual Slackware Linux birthday present.

I suggest that every July each of us donate the age of Slackware in dollars to Slackware Linux. This year Slackware is 22 years old so we donate $22. Next year Slackware will be 23 years old so we donate $23 next year.

It's a small amount of money for each of us compared to how much time we spend with Slackware each year.

This extra financial support may help a little to lessen any monetary pressure about the timing of the next stable release. The release decision can continue to be based on merit ("when it's ready") and not the calendar.

A variation on this idea is to buy something from the Slackware Store each July, such as a couple of shirts. Of course you can buy something AND make a donation.

From reading this forum I understand that many of you support Slackware by purchasing Slackware products throughout the year. If July has rolled around on your calendar and you haven't yet purchased anything from The Slackware Store this year, consider sending a birthday present.

If you're not familiar with the methods to make a donation see the details below ...

----------

Perhaps the simplest way to send your birthday present is to use the Paypal Donate button in the top left corner of the website store.slackware.com. Once you've gone to the Paypal donate page there is a check box to "Make This Recurring. (Monthly)" if you want make a repeating monthly automatic donation.

If you don't want to use Paypal you can simply purchase the "Donation to the Slackware Project" item at the Slackware Store.

Or a check or money order can also be sent to:

Quote:

Slackware Linux, Inc.
1164 Claremont Dr
Brentwood CA 94513-2952
USA

(925) 240-6652
Attach a note to your check or money order stating that it is a contribution to Slackware Linux.

----------

Previously in this forum some have asked for a method to send donations directly to Mr. Volkerding and not use the Slackware store.

Please note that Mr. Volkerding worked out this business arrangement with the store to handle donations to Slackware Linux, any revenue sharing with the Slackware Store for donations is agreeable to Mr. Volkderding. He gets to keep working on Slackware instead of handling business transactions every day.

I'm just a fellow user/customer/enthusiast like you. I am not associated with Slackware Linux or The Slackware Store.

Good idea. Buying a t-shirt from the Store was long overdue anyway.

I bought the black T-shirt. Once I move to a permanent address, I will set up my subscription.

Great idea! I own two Slackware T shirts, and I have a subscription. A subscription to Slackware is another great way to support Slackware.

Wonderful thinking! Got some shirts and did the $22 thing too.

Love it! Just donated the $22.

Good idea. Done it. A subscription is good value for money, too, around £50 per release here in the UK.

Great Idea just sent it in. I predict a new shinny disk this year for my shelf LOL. The distro subscription is a wonderful thing also. 22 reasons get my slack back praise Bob.

Good idea. [offtopic] Nice store website too. I managed to donate without even having to disable librejs. Only one or two trivial javascripts that didn't seem to be needed to complete the transaction. If only the rest of the web were more like this.

In the spirit of the anniversary, here is a little bit of nostalgia from 1995:

Already made donation for value of the full disk set. Love being a slacker. Learning everyday. I encourage all readers of linuxquestions/slackware to again donate to BDFL. Thanks Patrick for the wonderful distribution and your dedication to this endeavor.

I don't know about their web store (I will check that now and donate of course ;) ) but the site of Slackware is badly outdated (some of the information in it, not the lack of news). How often BDFL updates it?

I think it is up to date and is very fast website. I really do not find what your saying useful to this thread. Do you Really.

I've always wanted to support slackware by buying some merchandise, disc sets or maybe a t shirt. However it seems counter productive being in the UK, as the international shipping costs are insane. More money would be going to the postal services than the slackware team.

I still recommend someone set up a cafepress page (or similar) where people can buy shirts (or mugs and other stuff) without the insane shipping costs. I remember volkerdi once set up a cafepress page, however the choice is very limited to just 1 style of t-shirt featuring a funky logo that i remember many didn't like at the time. As long as most of the proceeds went to slackware i'd be happy buying some stuff.
