Installing KDE3 on Xfree86 4.2 on Slack8

Hey folks,

I did a new installation of slackware on a P2 350. I choose not to install the X and KDE/GNOME package selections because i wanted both another X and KDE than which are included in Slack8 (When will 8.1 finally be here? )

I installed kernel 2.4.18 and Xfree 4.2 whitout anyproblems and i whas very happy about linux because it seemed so easy. I almost formatted all other PC's i have to start installing slack. BUT, then the problems started, after installing the KDE3 packages from the slackware-current directory it says something like "Unable to start kdeinit" in X, and when X is shut down, i see the message "Unable to find shared libraries".
I did install Qt, or doesn't that has anything to do with it?

I would really appreciate some help here. If i get this to work, then the slackware community has gained itself a new enthousiast user.

Thanks in advance ppl,

CathodioN.

Remove all kde2 & kde3 & qt packages then re-install kde3 packages with qt3 alone.

Have a look in /etc/profile.d for kde.sh and qt.sh, make sure they both point to the respective kde3 and qt3 locations, then check out /etc/X11/xinit and make sure xinitrc is a symlink to xinitrc.kde, also you need to check that the path to qt and kde are in /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig again if you have to add them.

The primary problem is that KDE3 requires an upgraded version of libpng from the version in Slack 8. In Slack 8 and earlier, the libpng package was in the "d" set. In slackware-current, however, the upgraded libpng package is to be found in the "l" set. So if , for example, you had just package-upgraded "d" to the versions in slackware-current from the Slackware 8 versions, you would have missed upgrading libpng without realizing it.

Upgrade the libpng package to the version from slackware-current (in addition to the other recommended KDE3 installation steps), and the "cannot start kde-init" error messages should cease and the wm should start up properly.
