GNOME freezes when loading metacity
GNOME on Slackware 10.0 freezes when loading metacity and it does it every time (with GDM and with startx). The safe-mode works fine... a little slow in loading though. Any ideas on how to fix this?

use KDE. it is much better. I used to be a GNOME lover but when i tried KDE I found it was faster and it had much cooler apps plus you can run all of your old GNOME stuff.

What I do when Gnome acts up:
1) Create a new user. See if the problem exists for that user If everything is OK for the new user, you most likely have a bad configuration file in ~/ 2) Delete EVERYTHING in /tmp and reboot. Sometimes, this works. Never bothered to figure out why. |
Aha! I got it just 2 minutes ago! I typed rm -r /home/myusername/.gnome* and it worked!
I don't like KDE. It feels.. two Windowsy for my taste. Next time this happens I'll try your technique, shilo. Thanks. |
you could replace metacity with openbox. Install it and run it in your session by using the sessions manager thing under 'preferences'.
put: /usr/bin/openbox --replace in additional startup programs. Openbox is a bit nippier than metacity. Install obconf to change WM config (installs under applications>>other in the Gnome menu). |
What are the advantages to using openbox?
