First install of Slackware > grub rescue

Hi,

I finally got round to installing Slackware 13.37, got a "grub rescue" prompt on the screen the first time I booted. I have googled this and tried various fixes but not helping.

I have no lilo file, I tried installing grub and that's not worked either.

Any ideas?

Ah I see, grub is the default ubuntu boot loader, must still be there from my ubuntu install. Not that it helps me

when you installed slackware you should install LILO on hardisk MBR to replace grub boot loader. I suggest you login into your slackware installation from your slackware boot media and run liloconfig, but this time, make sure to install lilo on MBR

Well, how about what ubuntu says to do with this prompt? Did you try those? What happened when you did?

If you want to blow away grub and install LiLo, you can use the dd command to format the MBR. I had to do that once.

You can boot the Slackware install medium to run the command, then start the setup routine, go to the "Configure" item, and work through the prompts till you get to the part about installing LiLo.

Frankly, the Slackware "simple" install for LiLo has never worked for me. I've always ended up using the "Expert" install.
