Finally fixed a really slow WPA connection

-=Slackware 12.2 on Z60t thinkpad=-

I have had a very slow wireless connection. Three or four days of changing settings, I finnally figured out that it was the channel. I was using a channel that no one else was using (according to Kismet), so I assumed that there was no interference. After trying different channels I have a great connection.

If anyone else is having similar problems could be something to try.

I was also able to turn broadcasting off with WPA and WPA2 which I thought I had read somewhere was not possible. Maybe it was in reference to an older version.

Slackware rules!!

Hi,

It should not matter as too which channel you set as long as no conflicts from other wireless devices such as some phones or other wireless devices. You must have the correct channel for both the computer and the wireless router. You could have been experiencing channel conflicts with other WAP within proximity of yours. I have seen a lot of other wireless access points on the same channel without conflict when things are setup properly. Another plus to having a Ethernet connection rather than a wireless connection. You can do a scan to see if there are other devices that maybe on the same channel as yours.

Do you have any wireless phones or devices in close proximity to your Wireless Device?

My problem has come back. After reading your post, I realize that an old antenna is still hooked up to a different computer and is powered on. It is inches from the AP. I will see how things work after I remove it. Now that I think about it, we have been having some issues with our DECT 6.0 phones too. One of them spends most of it's time "searching. . .". Oh, I do have neighbors using WPA also.

Hi,

You can diagnose by shutting the phones down for a short period.
As for your neighbors access points, channel hopping is a possibility. But if the wireless is setup properly there should not be a problem with having multiple units on the same access channel. If there is then someone that has a failing unit or intermittent transceiver is at fault. It makes this type hard to find without proper equipment. I've seen some failing adapters create collision problems but these type of errors are rare.

Do you by chance have any other wireless devices? What type of wall construction do you have for exterior and interior? Your neighbors could have other wireless devices (phones or whatever) that are interfering with your access.

I live in the country so I don't have to investigate anyone else but my devices. I've had wireless transceivers for phones that have caused problems. New enough to exchange for a new product.

I've been wanting to replace my thermostat with a wireless/Ethernet unit. Leaning towards the Ethernet unit for these same reasons. Plus the fact that the wired will have backup power from the server. To much to do in so little time! :)
