ALSA: appls play .wav well, but play .mp3 disastrously.

kernel 2.4.22, slackware 9.1
alsa-driver-0.9.6, alsa-lib-0.9.6 packages

Hi:
After installing 9.1, I ran alsa.conf and everything went well. Now something happened, I do not know what. The fact is I still can play .wav files and audio CDs, but when it comes to .mpg files, neither mpg123 nor mpg321 play them well. The sound is totally distorted, ridiculously harsh.

So, the sound board (Yamaha OPL3-SA3) can't be guilty. It must be something in the software chain. The mixer controls all seem to operate correctly. I think the problem ought to be in the decoding process. But how to check this?

I have plenty of means for listening music. It's not the music, but the feeling that something is wrong in the system. Could you give me some hint?

mpg321 is linked to mpg123 so don't bother trying both. Is there any useful output in the console with mpg123? What about with mplayer? That is usually a bit more verbose.

I've lost the entire disk contents, as a result of a catastrophic failure. I'll see what happens when that machine is operative again. Thanks.
