System Notification's sounds don't work
I'm using Mandrake 10 with Sound Blaster Live!. The sound card is working perfectly because I can play mp3's and cd's normally. The problem happens when I try to set up the System Notification. I would like to be warned by sound when a message comes from Kmail or someone gets on line on my instant messaging application. But, it simply doesn't work. I can't even test the sound I chose... I push the "test" button and there is no sound at all. Although, when I play it by using a regular player (like Totem) it works nice. What can I do about it?

Hi,
It sounds like you don't have aRts running (KDE's sound-server). Check if it is running in the KDE Control Panel under Sound. Peace! Carsten B. Jensen |
aRt is running. I can even use the command "artsplay arquivename". But when I run the System Notification to configure sounds for the events nothing works.
I'm completely unmotivated to keep using Linux... When I was trying to configure the sounds, my adsl connection stopped working without any reason. There were been two months since I installed Mandrake 10 in my computer and I can't do basic things like navigating at the same time I see a divx video, or be warned with sound if a new email message arrives. Frequently I have to go back to Windows, because if I don't do it I can't do my job. Sorry for the complaints, but I'm really mad with this situation. |
In the file /home/****/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc StartProgress-section should be like
Arts Init=true KNotify Init=true Use Arts=true Hope this helps. |
Thanks myr,
I am new to this thread but that fixed my problem. Very cool. A few days ago I got this warning that artswrapper was not running realtime and that I needed to make its permissions suid root. After doing that I lost all system notification sounds in KDE. Changing that script did the trick. Much thanks. Now if only xmms would stop crashing...Thank god though for other choices. tsw |
Thank you very much, myr. Your solution has finished my sound problem!!!
