If you're having the devil of a time finding the right downloadable distro, installer, iso-decrypter, and transmogrifiers to simply install some version of Linux on your machine, this is probably the place for you, especially if we're talking an older machine already infected with Winblows, or maybe you want the dual-boot option.

Linux LQ is a wonderful enterprise, a lighthouse in the evil darkness of a fallen Microsux world, and I found many of the people there to be absolutely awesome in terms of their knowledge, skills, and willingness to help. However, it has matured to the point that it is mostly Greek, addressing subjects in Greek, that will only intimidate and discourage a newcomer or acolyte, who will sometimes feel in over their heads even in the "Newbies" forum.

Posts entailing cryptic console commands, inscrutable acronyms, in-depth analyses and/or references to nebulous high-level aspects of Linux will be relegated to the forums for more experienced users. This will probably remain the smallest blog on LQ, and deliberately so, as I will pare and prune mercilessly. The ANSWER is "yes", and "no".
Yes:[/B] Ubuntu 12.04.1, a free, full-blown version released August of 2012 was downloaded and installed to my old Pentium D 3Gig with 1 Gig of RAM, bing zip zam, by the wubi at the bottom of the page at
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.1/.
<Use the wubi that WORKS, suffixed "12.04.1" >
One responder suggested doing a web search for "wubiuefi" (up-to-date wubis for recent versions), but that's another quest.
No: Most versions of Linux, especially current,supported versions, apparently do not have a wubi.exe or one-click installer that actually works or can be located easily.
In this regard, if you're feeling froggy, you can have (perhaps) any version you like. The process is:
1) download an absurd standard, the "ISO file", for the version you want.
2) "burn" the ISO file to disk or USB (gotta use another program for this, you
can't just copy the file onto the chosen medium -- try
https://cdburnerxp.se/en/home for a CD, or
unetbootin for a USB stick, from https://unetbootin.github.io/)...
3) with the "LiveCD" or USB stick in, reboot, and (allegedly) you get an
"install" menu.
