whats a good mpeg player?
whats a good mpeg player for redhat9 thats fairly easy to install?
thanks |
Well, personally, I like MPlayer. Installing can be a bit of a pain - although the readmes are pretty good - and there are rpms on the web to ease installation for rpm users.
The beauty of MPlayer is that once you've installed the codecs it can play just about any video/audio file. |
i have installed MPlayer on my RH9 but still can't play any movie files. It was a fatal error msg.
There was 3 rpms were installed: 1) mplayer-common-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm 2) mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm 3) mplayer-skin-default-1.0-2.noarch.rpm What is the problem? |

Don't go for easiest, go for the best and best quality. mplayer is your answer in my opinion. It might be a little more difficult but its worth it in the long run.
Going the easy route will get you no where using Linux. There will be that time where you encounter something hard and don't understand, installing a program that is a little harder only gets you a step closer into understanding how it works and how it works with Linux. Regards. |
Ya, go with MPlayer. It works really well, is really easy to install (once you figure it out once- then you just write a script to do everything for the next time). Plus Mozilla has plugins for it, and it will play quicktime and realplayer files.
The quality is great too. If you need help installing, look for a readme tutorial online, there are a few good onces listed on google. It may also be easier for you to install with source code compiling, rather than RPM's. |

xine's a good player too. it will use the mplayer codecs for .mov, wmv, real, etc... the libxine libraries are distributed as source only, but you can build rpms from the source. |
My vga card is Riva TNT Vanta 32mb and was detected in linux 9.0 as TNT2.
The error message was : "FATAL ERROR : Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device." I have installed it at my friends pc like i was and it can play movie files. Any idea? |
How do you start mplayer, so you use "mplayer", or "gmplayer". the second program opens a player window, where you can set the preferences very easy.
if you use "mplayer", you need to define these prefs in a configuration file. :p |
