The most basic explanation is that it provides access to your shell so you can interact with your system using the command line. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_emulator for more info.

A terminal was/is a peice of hardware that basically consists of a monitor and a keyboard. It connected to a mainframe computer via RS-232 cable and as you probably guessed is a command line interface only. There are special commands to move the cursor, create bolt text, underline etc. A terminal emulator is an application that has the apperance of a terminal monitor screen and can be configured to emulate different hardware. The Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) model VT100 was very popular and many emulators are preconfigured to use its command set by default.

Google for more information.

Social change and technological changes have strong parallels in history. Early video games pushed for faster frame rates and higher resolutions. The industries are cooperating in our present world of electronic sharing and political dissatisfaction. Earlier, most patents precluded the sharing. Keeping each individual company scrambling to develope and deploy the quality releases to participate strongly in the present and future market places. This separatism slowed growth and caused financial difficulties with new technologies and mass production. Our friends in Open Source are sharing with us the best of both worlds. High quality and strong market places.

UhhMaybe, I've been trying to get in touch with you but it seems like we can't send you email directly from the forum. Can you kindly email me, because I need to discuss something with you regarding your current posts. Thanks.

A terminal emulator is the sort of terminal you get when you open a terminal from a graphical user interface (Gnome, KDE, ...). Those are distinguished from virtual consoles, which is what you get when you press Ctrl + Alt + F[1-6] (press Alt +F7 to get back to your GUI).
