Installing Linux In a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop

Recently I bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop for my son. I want to install Linux in it because he is learning "C" programming in Linux.I have tried by using a Suse 10.1 and Fedora core 6 dvd, but in each case there is an error message "Installation media not found". But these DVDs work perfectly in my desktop. One person told me that in order to install linux or Windows XP in that laptop I have to install Sata driver first. Is it true? Can anybody please guide me in installing linux in it ?

I've never needed a SATA driver to install Linux on a computer with a SATA hard drive (or at least anything additional to what is provided on installation media). I would try a Live/installation CD instead of a DVD. Try Debian for instance.

Look into Ubuntu Jaunty. I installed in laptop with sata drive without issues. Old distributions with older kernel could need drivers. Any recent distribution should be ok though.

Both those are old releases - try current versions; 11.1 for OpenSuse (free ) or Fedora 11.
Or Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) as suggested. All should work "out of the box".

All available for free download.

On the Dell 1545 you have to go into the bios and change the Sata drive to ATA instead of ahci. That is what I had to do then your linux flavor should have no problems.

Thanx a lot for your suggestion. I have now installed UBUNTU 9.04 and FEDORA 10 without any problem. May I expect a little more help from you? I use a ADSL 2+ (GLB-502T) router for connecting to internet in windows. But I have no idea how it can be done in linux. I need some help for this.

Well this has been taken into account a lot of times. So search for it. Also start a new thread for it.
For Ubuntu pppoeconf command is what you will need.

Check in your bios support AHCI mode, and try to set it as Auto.

!545's come with Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 already installed. I have 9.04 installed (but for some reason cannot get 9.10 Live Cd to work with the LCD or external display - although others have had no problem). The Fedora 12 LiveCD works fine.

Woked!

Just switch the Ahci to IDE....

Sure it helps!

I bought a Dell 1545n new with 2 GB RAM with Ubuntu on it several years ago, when getting native Linux machines from Dell was easy.

Now it's running Slackware --Current. The only troublesome bit is that it includes a Broadcom wireless chip, so you have to do a bit of extra work to get the Broadcom working.

Unless you are constrained by the amount of RAM, there is no reason not to install a contemporary Linux distro on that box. By the by, Slackware is an excellent distro for persons wanting to learn programming, as it includes by default many of the tools needed for software development.
