Linux on Palm TX Setup...
 

Hello. I'm Ricardo & I need help getting started with getting Linux on my Palm TX. I have seen videos on YouTube about Linux with Palm TX (Most are in Spanish, I think, which I know a little of.), but non about setting it up. I have been searching the web for help. I then saw this site & joined. So, can anyone tell me the best Linux suitable/works for Palm TX? I have seen one on HackNDev.com, but not sure if thats all I need for it to run propperly on Palm TX. I have seen other pages (Not this site) & sites that say you need this & that. Not sure if there old, though. They sound complicated. Anybody got or found a step by step guide/instruction that is easier? Any advice/help is greatly apreciated :) .

1- http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~miska/TX.tgz

2- Extract it using Winrar or tar xvzf TX.tgz in Cygwin, or Linux.

3- Put contents of the TX directory in the root of your SDCARD (Normal SDs will work with the rootfs.ext2 most probably, while other min and micro ones may not be compatible).

Here is the directory structure:

LINUX
>home.ext2
>modules.squash
>rootfs.ext2
>rootfs.squash
>swapfs
PALM
>Launcher
>>cocoboot.prc
initrd.gz
cocoboot.conf
linux.boot.cfg
zImage

3- Flush your DbCache and start cocoboot.prc .

4- voila! You have the real multitasking on your T|X!
Once you're done with Linux, you can return to Palm by reseting.

Note: Have your Palm backed up as precaution.

Thanks for the link & help :) . I'll have to check it out sometime. I had figured it (Getting Linux on Palm) out before this, though (Research). I got a Linux for palm at hackndev.com. It was good, but not great. Is there a Linux (Or other OS-Sorry if & for not relative to LQ.com) that has Internet capabilleties (Wifi)? Also the one you gave me, which or what kind is it? Angstrom Opie?

If you're going to give up all of the niceness of the Palm PIM apps and descend into ugly Linux PIMs of varying capabilities, you're better served with a real linux handheld like the Nokia N800.

The N800 (and N810 for that matter) currently have a beta of the Garnet OS (Palm OS 5) Virtual Machine that while a tad unstable works nicely for some people. You could find the N800 at retail for about USD 200 or so these days.

I have an N800 and desparately wish it had the Palm OS PIMs running natively in Linux, but I'm willing to live with it for the extraordinary potential and power of the device, especially it's Firefox-renderer-based web browser.

I've never heard Maemo (Debian variant) referred to as Garnet OS. Are you sure it's the same thing? I was beginning to think I would never see Garnet OS.
I just ordered one.. with that same thing in mind. I read somewhere that there is a PalmOS emulator for linux that can be used on the N800. Have you tested that approach?

The N800 runs a version of Debian Linux.

The Garnet VM is the Palm OS 5 Garnet OS Virtual Machine for the Nokia tablets. It runs as an application on the N800. The Palm apps and other things are installed into it from a control panel in the VM.

The N800 was down to $180-something on buy.com earlier this week. It's a steal at that price.

www.InternetTabletTalk.com is the main site for help and advice on using the Nokia tablets, and they have a whole forum dedicated to the Garnet VM.

I see what you're saying.. I got confused, because there actually were plans for Palm to drop PalmOS in favor of linux, but this is not that.. this is more like a PalmOS emulator. I forgot Garnet was just an alias for PalmOS 5.4.

I'm hoping this emulator will handle running TomTom Navigator 6, for example. From the Garnet VM website it certainly appears to be ready for prime time. I hope that's not just an illusion. It appears to even come packaged with the familiar Palm applications - making it real easy to use the N800 as a complete Palm replacement.
That's actually the only reason I discovered this device. All the prices have shot back up to $230.

Kind of brittle.
 

I find the VM to be pretty brittle. I can crash it playing SpaceTrader on it every time. Just a matter of time until it blows up and crashes out.

Others on the forums also have had issues with it.

I'm hopeful they give away the final version when the beta expires in a few months, May I think, but until then I won't be relying on it.

As of the time of this writing there is no WiFi Linux for Palm.
The Link given is the latest stable release of opie for Palm.

IMHO The future of Mobile world goes Palm = ALP or Nova .
No more, specially when you have them both based on Linux kernel and joining the LIMO . .
